Radar and Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) form the cornerstone of modern maritime collision avoidance and navigation. This certification programme is aligned with STCW Section A-II/1 requirements for Watchkeeping Officers on vessels of 500 GT and above, and covers both the theoretical principles and practical application of maritime radar systems in all conditions. The course addresses the full spectrum of radar operations: from the physics of radio wave propagation and radar beam characteristics to the interpretation of complex traffic scenarios, ARPA tracking, target acquisition, and the application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs 1972, as amended). Students develop the critical judgment required to distinguish safe from unsafe passing distances and to take timely, effective action to avoid collision. On completion, candidates will hold a verifiable certification demonstrating competency in radar navigation and ARPA operations, meeting the documentation requirements of administrations that reference STCW Chapter II and IMO Model Course 1.07 (Radar Navigation). The qualification is recognised by maritime employers across flag states and accepted by independent maritime employment platforms.
