The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code was adopted by the IMO in December 2002 as an amendment to SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and entered into force on 1 July 2004 in the wake of global security threats. The Code establishes a comprehensive risk-based framework for enhancing the security of ships and port facilities involved in international trade. This Ship Security Officer (SSO) certification programme covers all requirements of STCW Regulation VI/5 and the associated Section A-VI/5 of the STCW Code, as well as IMO Model Course 3.19. Candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and judgment required to serve as SSO on any vessel engaged in international voyages, including the development and implementation of the Ship Security Plan (SSP), conducting security drills, and interfacing with the Company Security Officer (CSO) and Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs). On successful completion, the MarCert Global SSO Certificate documents compliance with STCW Regulation VI/5 and ISPS Code requirements, and is accepted by maritime flag state administrations and port state control authorities. The certificate is blockchain-verified and publicly verifiable, providing immediate confirmation of qualification for vessel operators and maritime employers worldwide.
