The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is the internationally mandated communication framework that replaced the Morse code distress system in 1999. Established under SOLAS Chapter IV and the ITU Radio Regulations, GMDSS defines the equipment, procedures, and watchkeeping obligations that govern all maritime radio communications on vessels engaged in international voyages. This certificate programme covers the full scope of the IMO Model Course 1.25 and the ITU Radio Regulations requirements for the General Operator's Certificate (GOC) or Restricted Operator's Certificate (ROC). Candidates master Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on VHF, MF, and HF bands; INMARSAT satellite communication; NAVTEX reception and interpretation; EPIRB and SART operation; and the procedural requirements for distress, urgency, and safety communications. On completion, the MarCert Global GMDSS Certificate provides documented evidence of competency required by flag state administrations and port state control. Combined with practical type-specific training, it prepares candidates for GOC/ROC examinations and ongoing GMDSS watchkeeping duties.
